Writing Night for Bachelor's and Master's Theses: Writing Productively and Staying Motivated Together
An inspiring writing night for bachelor’s and master’s students at FERNFH offered helpful techniques and a motivating community to help them make progress on their master’s or bachelor’s theses.
On November 5, 2024, FERNFH hosted a “Writing Night” for bachelor’s and master’s students, offering students from all degree programs the opportunity to immerse themselves in their theses together. The event, led byMMag.aTanja AdamcikandProf.(FH) Mag.aDr.inChrista Walenta, guided participants through a structured and inspiring evening that focused on group writing and achieving individual goals.
A Clear Plan for Success
At the start of the writing night, the program was explained to the participants, and time was set aside for questions. The students then set specific goals for the upcoming writing session so they could make the most of the approximately 90 minutes in a focused and motivated way. This was followed by a clustering exercise in which thoughts and ideas were visualized and structured, before a freewriting session further stimulated the flow of writing. The relaxed approach helped the students begin writing without the pressure to be perfect—a valuable step toward expressing themselves more freely and putting their ideas down on paper.
The Writing Phase: Being Productive Together
During the longer writing session, the students worked on their texts for nearly an hour and a half, supported by the quiet presence of the group and a short break to lighten the mood. For some, this meant writing a subsection; others used the time to develop the methodological or theoretical parts of their papers. The collaborative atmosphere boosted motivation, which helped the students stay focused and work effectively on their texts.
At the end of the event, participants had the opportunity to share their experiences during a reflection session. The event concluded with the announcement of the next Writing Night on March 12, 2025—another opportunity to work on their own writing projects in a supportive environment and celebrate their achievements.
The Writing Night demonstrated once again just how valuable writing together is for progress and motivation. It’s an event that inspires—and one that students can look forward to again.
