Institute Leadership

Mission Statement

The Institute for Information Technology and Business Informatics (ITWI) is responsible for teaching both traditional and contemporary knowledge in the fields of business informatics and information technology, and conducts research in selected subfields.

The Business Informatics ( Bachelor's) program provides students with a solid foundation in information technology, both for decision-making and for its application in business.

The Information Technology ( Master's) program provides students with up-to-date knowledge in technological fields such as data science, IT security, and e-commerce technology, and prepares them to perform a wide range of tasks in IT and digitalization that require complex management and technical skills.

Our mission includes:

Dynamically adapting our expertise in both teaching and research to the rapidly changing challenges of information technology and business informatics.
Cross-institutional and interdisciplinary research—particularly in the application of AI in healthcare.
Establishment of a systematic framework for the transfer of expertise from research to teaching.

R&D Priorities

Our research priorities align with the specialization tracks in the Master's program in Information Technology.

Innovation Through Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

The research is conducted in close collaboration with the University Clinic for Ophthalmology and Optometry at the Medical University of Vienna.
Advanced Technologies in IT Security and the Design of Encryption-Based Frameworks
The focus of this research area is on

2. Model-Based Analysis of Attack Scenarios
3. Quantum-resistant encryption technologies
4. Design of privacy-friendly, encryption-based frameworks and certification models
We are collaborating with Austrian companies and healthcare institutions, as well as with researchers from the University of Vienna.

Digital Transformation

The practical application of digitalization’s potential—digital transformation—is permeating and fundamentally changing all sectors of the economy, from healthcare to public administration to agriculture.

The development and implementation of digital transformation require in-depth and complex expertise in all areas of information technology and business informatics. Our institute’s Bachelor’s program in Business Informatics and Master’s program in Information Technology provide students with the necessary skills for digital transformation, including management knowledge, statistical analysis, data science, and IT security. These skills enable students to define and specify interdisciplinary, complex tasks across all sectors of the economy, as well as to evaluate and implement the available technological solutions to address them. The knowledge gained through our degree programs is therefore of crucial importance and forms the foundation for implementing digital transformation across all sectors of the economy.

The institute’s research priorities center on implementing digital transformation in various fields. It makes a significant contribution to digital transformation in the healthcare sector through research and development of innovative solutions using artificial intelligence in healthcare. As part of its research and development of advanced technologies in IT security, the institute creates innovative methods that drive forward and accelerate digital transformation in every sector of the economy.
