Survival Guide for Starting College – 3 Tips for a Successful Start to the Semester
How can you get off to a successful start in college? Students and graduates of the Ferdinand Porsche FERNFH have shared their valuable experiences to help you gain more structure, motivation, and successful networking opportunities while studying online.
Is the start of your new—or even your very first—academic year just around the corner? Do you feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty about what lies ahead in the coming weeks? Are you wondering how you’ll manage and succeed in your studies?
Starting a distance learning program can be a challenge, especially for first-year students. But the good news is, you’re not alone. Many students before you have been in this situation and have found their own way through their studies. To help you get off to a good start this semester, we’ve compiled some tips for success from our experienced students and graduates at FERNFH:
Three Proven Strategies for Academic Success
1. Creating Structure – The Foundation for Everything Else
A well-thought-out semester and weekly schedule is the foundation for a successful distance learning program. Set study times and goals that work for you. This will help you stay on track and give you a sense of security, especially in the early stages of your studies. Experienced FERNFH students recommend setting fixed study times and sticking to them consistently. For example, our student Michelle Renz offers the following tip: “At the start of your studies, you’ll receive all assignment and exam deadlines along with recommendations on when to complete them. Naturally, it’s then up to you to follow these recommendations—especially during the distance learning phase at home.”
2. Stay the Course—Consistency Makes All the Difference
The second key factor for success is your consistency: In distance learning, it’s especially important to work steadily. Because of the great flexibility offered by studying at FERNFH, the risk of procrastinating on assignments increases during stressful times. This is also highlighted by the advice from our graduate Philipp Schiffner: “Don’t put off exams or assignments—it’s hard to make up the lost time.” So stay on top of things—this will not only save you unnecessary stress before deadlines, but it will also enable you to learn more deeply and sustainably. The motto is: It’s better to take regular, small steps than to make big leaps at the last minute.
3. Networking – Studying is easier when you do it together
The third key to success comes as a surprise to many newcomers to distance learning: active networking. Study groups and regular interaction with fellow students don’t just boost your motivation—they also broaden your perspectives and make your entire academic journey much easier. Your online learning platforms—the FERNFH Online Campus and MS Teams—offer ideal opportunities to quickly connect with other students, exchange ideas, and learn together. So keep this tip from our student Nicole Hogn in mind: “Even though it’s a distance learning program, you don’t have to do it alone—it’s often easier and more fun when you work together.”
A Successful Start as an Investment in the Future
The experiences of our FERNFH students and alumni show that a well-organized and well-connected start lays the foundation for a successful semester and, beyond that, for the entire course of study. The three pillars—structure, continuity, and networking—form a formula for success that has proven effective across all degree programs at Ferdinand Porsche FERNFH.
With these three simple yet effective strategies, nothing stands in the way of a successful start to your academic year. Ferdinand Porsche FERNFH supports you with comprehensive online tools, digital learning platforms, and active, personalized assistance with any questions or concerns you may have.
