As part of the “Alumni.Erzählen.” initiative, Dominik Leitner answers a few questions about distance learning, shares insights into his time at FERNFH, and explains how he applies the knowledge he gained to his professional practice.
- Why did you decide to study at the Ferdinand Porsche FERNFH back then?
Given my available time and my interest in expanding my personal skills, I looked into various forms of continuing education. In addition to traditional degree programs, I also considered offerings from alternative providers. The opportunity to continue working full-time while participating fully in the program at FernFH was a decisive factor in my decision. I was also personally drawn to the field of business informatics, which is why I chose this program.
- Looking back, what was the biggest challenge you faced while studying remotely?
The challenge was far greater, especially during my master’s program. At that time, I was living and working in China. So I always had to fly to Austria for exams and take them while dealing with jet lag. In addition, internet access in China is limited because many websites are blocked by government censorship, which makes it difficult to find information.
- What do you remember most about your time at FERNFH?
Despite the infrequent lecture and exam sessions, the atmosphere and relationships among my fellow students remained consistently positive. This factor was also very important during the period without in-person classes, as we were able to engage in one-on-one discussions within small groups, which helped maintain—and in some cases rebuild—both my own motivation and that of my classmates.
- How did the distance learning program at FERNFH impact your career or your current professional situation?
Studying at FernFH allowed me to shift my professional career toward a field that aligns with my personal interests. Within my new company as well, the training program offers greater opportunities for professional development, and this was also taken into account when planning my career path within the company.
- Which skills or abilities will become more important in your profession or industry in the future?
It is also important for employees to understand the processes introduced into the company through project management methods. Understanding these processes within international teams is also a key factor that permeates daily workflows.
- What three pieces of advice can you offer prospective students as they embark on their journey?
- Finding the right study and work group makes your academic journey much easier and also boosts your motivation.
- Especially at the beginning, it all seems like a lot and can be overwhelming. However, it gets easier, and sticking with it pays off.
- Good time management helps prevent stress. Setting a plan at the beginning of the semester is a good way to do this.
