Tax Deductibility
Under certain conditions, educational programs and materials may be tax-deductible as part of an employee's tax return.
Professional Development
Continuing education is defined as education that takes place while a person is already engaged in a professional activity, and the educational activities are intended to improve the knowledge and skills required to perform that activity.
Education
Training is considered to have taken place when the educational activities are intended to impart knowledge that will enable the individual to pursue a future career. Such expenses are tax-deductible if they are related to an activity connected to the individual’s current occupation.
Retraining
Retraining is defined as measures that are so comprehensive that they enable a person to enter a new line of work that is unrelated to their previous occupation and are aimed at the actual practice of a different profession.
Advertising Expenses
Deductible expenses include course fees (course tuition, training program fees, tuition, etc.), costs for course materials and professional literature, costs for “work supplies” (e.g., a proportionate share of computer costs), travel expenses, per diem allowances (for the first five days, if the course does not take place at the participant’s place of residence or work), and lodging expenses.
