Tax avoidance is an issue that raises concerns in both politics and society in many countries. Internationally, it has become the focus of the OECD's Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) initiative and the G20. Particularly, tax loopholes exploited by corporations have led to demonstrations against tax avoidance in many countries. The general public and governments are increasingly of the view that companies and wealthy individuals should pay their "fair share of taxes" to support the social, educational, and healthcare systems they benefit from. The failure to pay taxes is increasingly being examined as an ethical issue in research.
Tax practitioners are at the center of this online guest lecture. They advise their clients on tax matters and thus play a crucial role in shaping the economic world in this area. Prof. Dr. Summers will provide an in-depth examination of their role in tax avoidance and the development of tax strategies. She will present a research project on the ethical thinking of tax practitioners, aiming to uncover the motivations behind their decisions.
